The 93x46.2m rectangular structure is 28.9 high and faces Academician Sakharov Park in the east, adding a finishing touch to the residential area. The building is a spatial carcass with clearly articulated staircase and elevator blocks. The structure with a regular outline of the ‘wooden’ skeleton and visually weightless walls alludes to the traditional architecture of Japan, the homeland of judo. The ‘timbered’ grid is faced with fireproof wooden panels, while the infill is made up of metal or veneer panels. A translucent volume crowns the building; it rests on the stair shafts, which also have glass walls.
The main hall intended for public competitions is located on the third floor. The ceiling is 10.2 m high above the spectator seats and 12 m high above the competition mats. The dimensions of the hall allow for simultaneous competitions to be held on four tatamis as well as for calisthenics competitions. The hall seats 800 spectators.
