A site where Chernaya Rechka flows into the Neva River offers spectacular views of the Malaya and Bolshaya Nevka rivers, Petrogradsky and Kamenny islands, and, in the distance, – the city centre. Yet, a huge motorway separates the territory from the river preventing direct access to the water. Our aim was to realize the panoramic potential of the site, allowing water to reach visually its most distant areas; and in creating a most comfortable, ecological environment.
An oval park accommodates residential complex. Semicircle buildings do not reach the ground as if ‘floating’ in the air. They tend to break entirely with the traditional ‘semantics’ of a residential building. They can be rather identified as bridges, or some suspended structures. The buildings do not interfere with the park space allowing natural landscape into the depth of the site.
Complex constituents form a seamless amphitheatre-like ensemble overlooking the river.
Classical St. Petersburg with its long vistas and spatial openings through a web of grand arches and portals, as well as Constructivist radial layouts, cascade structures, and suspended galleries are among the historical prototypes for the design.
